The Confrontation Principle: Caring for people should precede confronting people

Point to Ponder: Conflict is like cancer: early detection increases the possibility of a healthy outcome.

The Question I must Ask Myself: Do I care enough to confront the right way?

The Truth About Conflict

○ We instinctively know some things about relationships to be true
§ Conflict is unavoidable
□ The only way to avoid conflict is to isolate ourselves from all other people on the planet
§ Confrontation is difficult
□ No one like confrontation so every one avoids it
□ Why is it difficult to confront?
¨ We fear being disliked, misunderstood, or rejected
¨ We fear the unknown
¨ We're not used to sharing our feelings
¨ We worry that we'll just make things worse
§ How we handle conflict determines our success in tough situations
□ Conflict always compounds when confrontation is not done quickly & correctly
¨ This is why your approach matters. Here's a sampling of harmful strategies that people use when dealing with conflict
◊ Win at all costs - quick, brutal and destructive
◊ Pretend it doesn’t exist - if you hear no evil, see no evil & speak no evil, evil will not cease to exist
◊ Whine about it - winners aren't whiners & whiners aren't winners. Playing the victim doesn't cure conflict. It just irritates everybody
◊ Keep score - people who keep a record of wrongs can't ever start over fresh. And nobody can ever get "even"
◊ Pull rank - using position never really resolves conflict. It merely postpones it
◊ White flag it - Quitting is a permanent solution to a temporary problem
¨ None of these approaches will give the help a person needs to resolve conflict in a healthy way

A Road Map for Healthy Confrontation

Conflict resolution isn’t complicated. Intellectually it’s simple.
But emotionally it can be difficult. It requires HONESTY, HUMILITY, & DEDICATION TO THE RELATIONSHIP.

Here’s a 6-step plan to help you tackle the task of confrontation.
1. Confront a Person ONLY If You Care for That Person
· Go into a confrontation with the other person’s best interests in mind

· “Deep down, your players must know you care about them. This is the most important thing. I could never get away with what I do if the players felt I didn’t care. They know, in the long run, I’m in their corner.” – Bo Schembechler, former head football coach of U of Michigan.
i. When you get ready to confront someone they should have that same kind of sense from you

2. Meet Together ASAP
· Putting off confrontation only causes the situation to fester
i. It’s never a good idea to save up a bunch of stuff & then give a person a history lesson during a confrontation.
ii. Instead meet right away, face-to-face.
iii. If that’s ABSOLUTELY impossible, then consider a conversation by phone.
iv. Under no circumstances should you confront someone via e-mail, text message, etc.

3. First Seek Understanding, Not Necessarily Agreement
· A significant hindrance to positive conflict resolution is having too many preconceived notions going into a confrontation.
i. “The person who gives an opinion before he understands is human, but the person who gives judgment before he understands is a fool

4. Outline the Issue
· Describe your perceptions
i. Stay away from conclusions &/or statements about the other person’s motives
ii. Just tell what you think you see, & describe the problem you think it’s causing.

· Tell how this makes you feel.
i. Express clearly and without accusation how the other person’s actions make you feel

· Explain why this is important to you
i. Many times when a person finds out that something is a priority to you, that’s enough to make him want to change.

5. Encourage a Response
· Never confront others without letting them respond.
i. If you care about people, you will want to listen.

· Sometimes simply having a discussion helps you to realize that your perceptions were wrong.

· Other times you discover that you need to take extenuating circumstances into account

6. Agree to an Action Plan
· A good action plan should include these points
i. Clear identification of the issue

ii. Agreement to solve the issue

iii. Concrete steps that demonstrate the issue has been solved

iv. An accountability structure, such as a time line & a responsible person.

v. A deadline for completion

vi. A commitment by both parties to put the issue in the past once resolved.

· Successful confrontation usually changes both people, not just one
i. The Reciprocity Rule: People will begin to have similar opinions of one another over time

· Positive change is the first measure of success when resolving conflict through confrontation.

· The ongoing growth of the relationship is the 2nd measure of success

Walking Through Dark Valleys

Summary: Where is God during our dark times?

Key Passage/s:

Genesis 37:1-4

1Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan. 2These are the generations of Jacob.Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. 3Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.[a] 4But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.

Genesis 41:39-41

39Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. 40You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command.[a] Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you." 41And Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt."

Genesis 45:5-8

5And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

Supporting Scripture/s:

John 14:16 - 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,[a] to be with you forever

1 John 1:6 - 6-7If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we're obviously lying through our teeth—we're not living what we claim. But if we walk in the light, God himself being the light, we also experience a shared life with one another, as the sacrificed blood of Jesus, God's Son, purges all our sin.

Romans 8:28 - 28And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[a] for those who are called according to his purpose.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 - 16So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17For this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Scriptural Principles:

1. God is with us in our dark valleys

The first lesson we all must learn is that God is with us in our dark times or valley experiences. You can be sure of that because throughout the scriptures He tells us that he will never leave us nor forsake us. In addition to that he has sent the Holy Spirit to comfort us when all seems lost (see John 14:16).

2. Walking in darkness doesn't mean walking through darkness

Before you start getting all bent out of shape think about what possibly could've done to put yourself in your current position. Too many people choose to live their lives outside of the will of God BUT when something bad happens they want to come back and ask God "LORD LORD WHY ME!? WHY ME?!" Yeah you know what I'm talking about! Poor circumstances happen to the best of us but poor behavior is a conscious choices we make that takes us out of the will of God and into the danger zone. So ask yourself...what am I doing wrong? Denial won't help. Get honest with yourself. I know I do! (see 1 John 1:6)

3. God has a purpose for our dark valleys

REMEMBER THIS! Trials always happen for a reason. Who would've thought Joseph being sold into slavery, betrayed by his own family would turn into something good? Good's not a good enough word! Miraculous is more like it. When you go through a trial you're being prepared for a significant opportunity that will make you laugh at what you went through! Romans 8:28 is a promise from God that everything will work out for our good. That's why when trouble comes I don't get upset I get excited. Then in 2 Corinthians 4:16-17 we see that we shouldn't lose hope because troubles don't last always and what's happening now is only going to build us for eternity. Isn't that a blessing!

4. God prepares us through our dark valleys

God has a plan for our hardtimes, & a great part of that plan is to prepare you for better things. Just look at Joseph. Remember: God never forgets us; He simply prepares us. You may not be able to see the "big picture" but just trust God knows what's best for you. If you could see the outcome of the trial you'd be a lot more patient. God willl leave you in the valley as long as necessary for your preparation.

5. God teaches us more in the dark valley than in the light

Remember that in difficult times we make the greatest strides in the lessons that really couunt. Think of it like this. IF you're in an easy class where the teacher just gives out grades for showing up or writing your name WHAT DO YOU LEARN? Will you be prepared for your career when you get out? Of course not. The same goes for growing through trials. You don't learn much when everything is going good nor do you learn much w/o applying what you've learned. But the greatest lesson you will learn in your valley experience is to TRUST GOD & TO WAIT ON HIM. One day it'll all come together

6. God moves us toward the light while we're in the dark valleys

Pretty self explanatory right? Basically don't see yourself as stalled but realize you're growing closer to God through every trial so how can you be stagnant if you're moving in the right direction.

7.God wants us to share what we've learned in the darkness

If you know the story of Joseph, you know that in time he was enlightned to everything that God had planned for him. One day he was in a dungeon the next he was advising a Pharoah. Don't forget to share how you've come out to someone else to give them hope. You can invaluable wisdom through trials.

8. Our only rational choice is to submit to God & trust Him to care for us.

Conclusion:

Have you walked through any dark valleys lately? How did you respond? What did you say to God when you spoke to Him about it?

No doubt you're gonna face new trials after this one but you can rest assure that God will use it for your good.

Today your assignment is to share what you've learned through a trial or trials. Do you know someone currently going through a valley you've already come out of? Bless their lives with your testimony.

Day 40. Living With Purpose (The Purpose Driven Life)

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails
~ Proverbs 19:21

For David…served the purpose of God in his own generation
~ Acts 13:36

Most people struggle with 3 basic issues in life
1. Identity - Who am I?
2. Importance - Do I matter?
3. Impact - What is my place in life?
The answer to these questions are found in God's 5 purposes for you

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them - John 13:17
Ø The blessing actually comes in doing the purposes
Ø You should develop a life purpose statement so that you don't get distracted

WHAT IS A LIFE PURPOSE STATEMENT?
Ø Summarizes God's purpose for your life
§ In your own words you affirm your commitment to God's five purposes in your life
Ø Points the direction of your life
§ Writing purposes down will force you to think specifically about the path of your life
Ø It defines "success" for you
§ States what you believe is important
§ Clarifies your values
Ø Clarifies your roles
§ You'll have different roles at different stages in life, but your purpose will never change
Ø It expresses your shape

Here are 5 questions to consider as your prepare your statement

LIFE'S 5 GREAT QUESTIONS
1. What will be the center of my life?
i. Who are you going to live for?
ii. What are you going to build your life around?
iii. You can center your life around your career, family, a sport or hobby, money, having fun, etc & these are all good things but they don’t belong at the center of your life
1) None is strong enough to hold you together when life starts breaking apart
2) Whatever is at the center of your life is your god.
iv. How do you know when Christ is the center of your life?
1) You worship instead of worry
a) Worry is the warning light that God has been shoved to the sideline
2. What will be the character of my life?
i. What kind of person will you be?
1) Make a list of character qualities you want to work on & develop in your life
a) You might want to begin with the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) or the Beatitudes (Matt 5:3-12)
b) 2 Peter 1:5
2) Don’t get discouraged & give up when you stumble.
a) It takes a lifetime to build Christlike character
b) 1 Tim. 4:16b
3. What will be the contribution of my life?
4. What will be the communication of my life?
i. This is the question of your mission to unbelievers
5. What will be the community of my life?
i. How will you demonstrate your commitment to other believers & connection to the family of God

As you answer these questions, include any scriptures that speak to YOU about each of these purposes

GOD WANTS TO USE YOU
David served God's purpose in his generation - Acts 13:36
§ This phrase is the ultimate definition of a life well lived
□ You do the eternal & timeless (God's purpose) in a contemporary & timely way (in your generation).
§ That's what the purpose-driven life is all about
□ Neither past nor future generations can serve God's purpose in this generation. Only we can
¨ Like Esther, God created you "for such a time as this" - Esther 4:14

Point to Ponder: Living with purpose is the only way to really live.

Verse to Remember: Acts 13:36

Question to Consider: When will I take the time to write down my answers to life's five great questions? When will I put my purposes on paper?

Day 39. Balancing Your Life (The Purpose Driven Life)

Live life with a due sense of responsibility, not as those who do not know the meaning of life but as those who do
~ Eph. 5:15
Don't let the errors of evil people lead you down the wrong path and make you lose your balance
~ 2 Peter 3:17

Blessed are the balanced; they shall outlast everyone

Your life is a pentathlon of 5 purposes, which you must keep in balance
1. "Love God with all your heart"
2. "Love your neighbor as yourself"
3. "Go & make disciples"
4. "baptize them into…"
5. "teach them to do all things"

We all tend to overemphasis the purposes we feel most passionate about & neglect the others
§ If you're serious about staying on track you'll need to develop these habits
§ Talk it through with a spiritual partner or small group
Proverbs 27:17
§ Give yourself a regular spiritual check up
2 Corinthians 13:5
□ For your spiritual health you need to regularly check the 5 vital signs of worship, fellowship, growth in character, ministry & mission
¨ Lamentations 3:40
§ Write down your progress in a journal
□ Not a diary of events, but a record of the life lessons you don’t want to forget
¨ Hebrews 2:1
□ Writing helps clarify what God is doing in your life
¨ Thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through your fingertips - Dawson Trotman
□ Don't just write down the pleasant things. Record your doubts, fears, & struggles with God
¨ Our greatest lessons come out of pain
§ Pass on what you know to others
Proverbs 11:24
2 Tim. 2:2b

Point to Ponder: Blessed are the balanced

Verse to Remember: Ephesians 5:15

Question to Consider: Which of the 4 activities will I begin in order to stay on track and balance God's five purposes for my life?

2 Corinthians 4:18
§ So much of what we waste our energy on won't matter even a year from now, much less for eternity
□ DON'T TRADE YOUR LIFE FOR TEMPORARY THINGS
¨ Luke 9:62
¨ 1 Corinthians 7:31

□ What are you allowing to stand in the way of your mission?
¨ Whatever it is let it go!
◊ Hebrews 12:1
◊ Matt 6:20-21
v Shift from thinking of excuses to thinking of creative ways to fulfill your commission
§ Jeremiah 1:7-8
§ You might believe you need a special "call" or a supernatural feeling BUT God has already stated his call repeatedly

Mark 8:35

Point to Ponder: The Great Commission is my commission

Verse to Remember: Psalm 67:2

Question to Consider: What steps can I take to prepare to go on a short-term missions experience in the next year?
